Before you head into the field or onto the water, check these fresh reports on mentored hunts, fishing regulations, trail access and paddling safety. Here is your outdoor news briefing for September 30, 2026.

Hunting and Seasons

• New York mentored pheasant hunts: A September 28 DEC announcement lists free events for licensed hunters: the Washington County Women’s Pheasant Hunt is October 3, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Fort Edward, and the Chesterfield youth hunt is October 4, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Keeseville, for ages 12 to 15. Check registration details in the DEC announcement carried by EIN Presswire.

Review your field checklist before the weekend. Browse the Hunting and Fishing collection for any remaining needs.

Fishing and Regulations

• Alaska commercial pollock closure: NOAA’s September 29 bulletin prohibits directed pollock fishing with trawl gear in the Winter Herring Savings Area from noon Alaska local time September 30 through noon March 1, 2027, including Community Development Quota vessels, to prevent herring bycatch. This is a commercial trawl action, not a general recreational fishing closure; read the NOAA Fisheries bulletin for the exact area and requirements.

Wildfire and Fire Restrictions

No significant updates today. No fresh, qualifying announcement was verified within the publication window; this does not mean existing restrictions have ended.

Trail and Access Closures

• North Umpqua Trail, Oregon: A September 29 notice announces a closure from Wright Creek Trailhead to Calf Creek Trailhead October 4 through October 7 for trail recovery operations. Choose another recreation area during that period, as requested in the U.S. Forest Service notice.

Water Safety

• Lake Tahoe rescue: A Coast Guard release published September 28 reports that a kayaker rescued about four miles west of Glenbrook on September 26 showed symptoms of hypothermia and was taken to Cave Rock for medical evaluation. All three paddlers in the group wore life jackets; the Coast Guard emphasized that wearing one buys time for rescuers to arrive, according to the release published by Carson Now.

Before your next paddle, check the fit and condition of your life jacket. Compare options in the Paddlesports Life Vests collection.

Gear Recalls

No significant updates today. No qualifying new outdoor-gear recall was verified in the 48-hour window.
