Hunting & Seasons

  • New York — Early seasons open today (Sept. 12): New York’s early bear season and early antlerless deer season are now open. The deer season covers 23 Southern Zone WMUs, including 10 newly added units this year. A Deer Management Permit (DMP) or antlerless tag is required. NY DEC
  • Michigan — Small game seasons open Sept. 15: Michigan’s 2026 small-game hunting regulations are in effect, with multiple species seasons opening September 15. Michigan DNR
  • Montana — Archery elk rule update (Region 1): Archery hunters in Region 1 should review revised antlerless-elk and Elk B license rules before heading out. Montana Outdoor
  • Wyoming — Hunter survey underway: Wyoming Game & Fish is conducting a large-scale survey on archery vs. firearm opportunity allocation. Your input shapes future season structures. Wyoming G&F

Fishing & Regulations

  • Oregon — Coho retention closure (Sept. 12): NOAA closed coho retention for recreational ocean salmon fisheries south of Cape Falcon, effective tonight at 11:59 p.m. Know your rules before you launch. NOAA Fisheries
  • Pacific halibut — Commercial period opens Sept. 15–17: NOAA announced a commercial halibut fishing period with a 5,000-pound vessel limit. NOAA Fisheries
  • Michigan — Inland trout, salmon & sturgeon regulations updated Sept. 10: Fishing and lake sturgeon regulations changed effective September 10. Michigan DNR
  • Wyoming — Green River voluntary closure lifted: Wyoming Game & Fish has lifted the voluntary warm-water fishing closure on the Green River. Wyoming G&F
  • NOAA — Gulf red grouper quota proposal: NOAA is proposing to withhold 275,000 pounds of the 2027 commercial Gulf red-grouper quota; comments are open through October 13. NOAA Fisheries

Wildfire & Fire Restrictions

  • Oregon — Deschutes NF: Stage 1 fire restrictions remain in effect through November 30. USFS
  • California — Mendocino NF: Lucas Fire closure in effect September 11–20. USFS
  • Oregon — Klamath NF: Fire restrictions eased in some Klamath wilderness areas. USFS

Trail & Access Closures

  • Grand Canyon — Inner-canyon closures ongoing: Multiple inner-canyon trail closures remain in place following the August 29 flash flood that destroyed footbridges over Bright Angel Creek. Check the NPS status page before any canyon trip. Grand Canyon NPS
  • Rocky Mountain NP — Glacier Gorge Trailhead: Closes September 28 through early October for erosion repairs. NPS
  • Washington — Miners Fire: Part of the Pacific Crest Trail remains closed due to the Miners Fire in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. USFS

Water Safety

  • Southern California — Kayak rescue reminder: Two kayakers were airlifted to safety after getting into trouble offshore. Officials emphasized carrying a VHF radio or backup communication device whenever paddling in open water. Paddling Magazine
  • North Carolina — Kayaker recovered at Lake Waccamaw: A missing kayaker was recovered after a search. Always file a float plan and paddle with a partner when possible. NC DNCR
