Before your next outing, check Wyoming’s drought-driven pheasant changes, Yosemite’s fire closures and three new outdoor-equipment recalls. Today’s briefing also covers the ongoing investigation into a fatal Lake St. Clair boating accident.

Hunting and Seasons
- Southeast Wyoming pheasant releases change with drought: Wyoming Game and Fish’s October 8 announcement says no pheasants will be released on Walk-In Areas in Goshen, Platte or Laramie counties this fall because drought left insufficient cover. Springer Wildlife Habitat Management Area will receive daily releases during the October 15 through 31 special hunt, then twice-weekly stocking during the extended general season ending November 30. Areas around Bump Sullivan Reservoir and south of Road 42W close to pheasant hunting after November 13. If you plan to hunt Springer, review the day-specific permit, license, nontoxic-ammunition and check-in requirements before traveling. (Wyoming Game and Fish).
As you review your trip checklist, browse the Hunting & Fishing collection and confirm that your equipment meets local requirements.
Wildfire and Fire Restrictions
- Yosemite Dome Fire at 47% containment: The National Park Service’s October 8 morning update reports 6,815 acres, 47% containment and 916 personnel assigned. The fire remained within its existing footprint as crews reinforced containment lines and addressed hazardous dead trees. Fire restrictions remain in effect below 8,000 feet in the park. Check the park’s current rules and smoke conditions before you choose a campsite or route. (National Park Service).
Trail and Access Closures
- Glacier Point Road and some Yosemite trails remain closed: The same October 8 update keeps Glacier Point Road closed because of smoke-related visibility and firefighting operations; Buena Vista Trail and trails within the active fire footprint also remain closed, including south- and eastbound trails accessed from Glacier Point Road. Four Mile and Panorama trails remain open to hikers. Alder Creek Trail is open north to Deer Camp Trailhead, and Chilnualna Falls Trail is open east from its trailhead to Chilnualna Fall and Crescent Lake. Use the park’s current closure map before setting out, rather than assuming an open trail means all connecting routes are open. (National Park Service).
Water Safety
- Three people die in Lake St. Clair boating accident: CBS Detroit’s October 8 report describes an accident involving two boats near MacRay Harbor in Michigan at about 8 p.m. October 7. Three occupants of a 23-foot Formula Thunderbird died; a fourth occupant swam to shore for help and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The other vessel was a 28-foot Sea Ray Sundancer, whose operator was cooperating with investigators. The investigation remains ongoing. The report does not establish the cause or whether life jackets were being worn. (CBS Detroit).
Before your next paddle, review your life jacket fit and condition. You can browse the Paddlesports Life Vests collection and check each product for your intended activity.
Gear Recalls
- Snow Peak propane inserts and lava rocks: CPSC’s October 8 recall covers about 100 Takibi Fireplace Propane Inserts and Lava Rocks, including insert model ST-332-US. The lava rocks can ignite and explode when heated. Stop using the recalled accessories and contact Snow Peak for the stated refund or replacement-rock remedy. If you retain the insert while waiting for replacement rocks, do not use it until those rocks arrive. Check the recall notice for return and disposal instructions. (CPSC).
- Decathlon Van Rysel gravel bicycles: About 1,150 Van Rysel GRVL AF bicycles are recalled because the front lock nut can loosen, allowing the front wheel to loosen or dislodge. Affected model families include Sword Brown, Apex Beige, Sword Pink and GRX Black, but only the product IDs listed in CPSC’s October 8 notice are covered. Match the barcode label near the bottom bracket to that list. Stop riding a recalled bicycle and take it to REI Co-op for a free front-fork inspection and repair, or contact Decathlon if you cannot visit REI. (CPSC).
- Giant SureLock LED-light keys: CPSC’s October 8 recall concerns LED-light keys supplied with certain SureLock bicycle lock sets, not the locks themselves. Children can access the button batteries, creating an ingestion hazard. About 3,630 units are covered in the United States, with another 1,395 sold in Canada. Stop using an affected LED key and contact Giant for a $5 refund through an authorized retailer; bring the lock or a photo of its serial number for verification. You may continue using the lock and its non-LED keys. (CPSC).
