Fishing and Regulations
- Central Gulf of Alaska Pacific cod pot fishery closes today: NOAA’s October 5 bulletin, published at 3 p.m., closes directed fishing for Pacific cod by vessels using pot gear in the Central Regulatory Area of the Gulf of Alaska at noon Alaska local time today, October 7. The action is intended to prevent exceeding that sector’s 2026 total allowable catch. Maximum retainable amounts continue to apply during a trip; this is a specific commercial fishery action, not a blanket recreational fishing closure. If it affects your operation, consult the Federal Register action for compliance requirements. (NOAA Fisheries, IB 26-41).

Water Safety
- Mississippi River boating investigation: An October 6 report identifies the two men who drowned after a 16-foot fishing boat struck a submerged object in Molo Slough, Pool 12 of the Mississippi River near Dubuque, Iowa, at about 3 p.m. on October 3. All three occupants were thrown into the water; a third passenger reached shore and was rescued by passing boaters. Iowa DNR’s investigation remains ongoing. The new report does not establish whether the occupants were wearing life jackets. (Iowa’s News Now).
For your next paddle, review your life jacket’s fit, condition and intended use. Explore the Paddlesports Life Vests collection and check each product’s suitability for your activity.
