Before you plan your next fishing trip or forest outing, review a new Gulf red grouper rule, planned prescribed burns, and Yosemite’s latest fire and access report. Use the original agency notices to confirm the rules and conditions for your destination.

Fishing and Regulations
- Gulf red grouper rule takes effect: NOAA’s October 2 bulletin announces higher red grouper catch limits effective that day, with a 2026 total annual catch limit of 6.62 million pounds gutted weight, including 2.11 million pounds for the recreational sector. The rule also removes the February 1 through March 31 recreational shallow-water grouper closure in federal waters beyond the 20-fathom boundary; NOAA says red grouper is the only species affected by that removal because other grouper closures still apply. Do not treat the increased fishery-wide quota as an increase in your personal bag limit (NOAA Fisheries).
Check the current regulations before organizing your tackle. Browse the Fishing Accessories collection as you review your equipment needs.
Wildfire and Fire Restrictions
- Prescribed burns planned on PSICC lands: An October 2 Forest Service alert says prescribed-fire operations on the Pike-San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands could begin as early as October 3, depending on suitable weather and fuels. Work may continue through 2026 as conditions allow; check the linked project schedules and maps before heading into an affected area, rather than assuming every planned burn has started (U.S. Forest Service).
Confirm your campsite’s access and current fire restrictions before packing. Explore the Camping collection for your trip checklist.
Trail and Access Closures
- Yosemite Dome Fire and access update: The October 3 morning report lists the fire at 6,632 acres and 40% containment, with 765 personnel assigned. Glacier Point Road, Chilnualna Falls Trail and trails from its top toward Buena Vista and Crescent Lakes remain closed, as do Ostrander Lake Trail and areas and trails south of it; Four Mile and Panorama trails remain open. Check the closure boundaries before choosing your route, since Yosemite remains open overall but these restrictions still affect access (National Park Service).
