Before your next trip, check Oregon’s upcoming winter steelhead validation sales and changes to fire and access restrictions in California and Oregon. A reduced fire closure does not mean every road or trail has reopened.

Fishing and Regulations
- Oregon: winter steelhead validation sales begin November 1: ODFW’s October 30 release says Rogue-South Coast Steelhead validations and wild steelhead harvest tags go on sale November 1 for the winter season; if you fish for winter steelhead in the Rogue Basin or on the South Coast, the validation is required from December 1 through April 30, 2027 (Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife). You need a separate wild winter steelhead harvest tag to keep a wild fish, and you should select purchase year 2027 in ODFW’s online product catalogue; to continue using the validation and harvest card after January 1, 2027, you also need a 2027 Angling License, Combination License or Sports Pac (Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife). Wild harvest rules vary by location, and some waters do not open to wild winter steelhead harvest until after December 1, so buying the tag does not establish that your chosen water is open (Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife).
After checking your destination’s season and license requirements, review your trip essentials in our Fishing collection.
Wildfire and Fire Restrictions
- California: Stanislaus terminates two fire-restriction orders: The Stanislaus National Forest’s October 29 release says fire managers terminated the fire-restriction orders for its High and Moderate Hazard Areas, citing recent and forecast precipitation and cooler overnight temperatures (U.S. Forest Service). The announcement addresses those two orders, not every possible restriction on every nearby property; before you plan a campfire, check the rules for your exact destination (U.S. Forest Service).
After checking the rules at your specific campsite, browse our Camping collection.
Trail and Access Closures
- Oregon: Austin Fire closure area reduced, restrictions remain: Mt. Hood National Forest’s October 30 alert update carries a new Austin Fire order, effective October 29, that reduces the closure area on the Clackamas River Ranger District and replaces the previous order (U.S. Forest Service). Order 06-06-05-26-20 still prohibits entry onto National Forest System lands, roads and trails inside its mapped closure area through December 31, 2026, unless updated or rescinded (U.S. Forest Service). Before you select a hiking or driving route, consult the order’s Exhibit A and boundary description; this is a partial reduction, not a reopening of the entire fire area, and the order does not apply to private or state inholdings (U.S. Forest Service).
