This one is small and maybe silly, but in the weeks before a backpacking trip, I keep my eyes peeled in restaurants/grocery stores/etc. for to-go travel condiments like peanut butter, jelly, honey, hot sauce, salt, pepper, and sugar.

I do this to enhance my meals and drinks while on the trail. A little hot sauce can really spruce up a dehy meal! And who doesn't want honey in their tea?

One fallback: this tactic produces micro trash. You gotta keep a close eye on your trash and pack it all out.

I'll add a tip for newer backpackers. I always recommend planning out HOW you're going to pack your gear. The how is almost as important as the what. Make sure you are strategic with where you are placing the heaviest and the bulkiest items. Do some trial packs and walk around with it on your back well before heading out on your trip.

If you don't map out your gear well and disperse the weight appropriately, you will not be a happy camper. Pun intended. Trying it out before you hit the trail is the best bet to be sure it feels right. It's also helpful to know where important items are in your park, such as water filtration or first aid supplies. If you need something in a pinch, it's important to know right where to go without rummaging or having to empty half your gear onto the trail to get to what you need!
