Trail and Access Closures

  • Washington: updated Little Giant Fire closure takes effect: The Forest Service’s October 31 update sets out a Little Giant Fire closure effective November 1 through April 30, 2027, unless rescinded sooner, within the mapped area of Washington’s Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest (U.S. Forest Service). The order prohibits entry or use of roads, recreation sites, campgrounds and trails inside the defined closure area on the Wenatchee River, Entiat and Chelan ranger districts, addressing wildfire, burned-forest hazards and suppression and repair work (U.S. Forest Service). Before you choose a route or campsite, consult the linked order and map for the exact boundary; the notice does not close every part of those ranger districts or identify every boundary change from the previous order (U.S. Forest Service).

Once you have confirmed a legally accessible route, review your trip essentials in our Hiking collection.

Water Safety

  • California: one dead after capsizing near Del Mar Jetty: An October 31 report, citing the Oceanside Fire Department, says one person died and another suffered minor injuries after a vessel overturned near Del Mar Jetty on Friday evening, October 30 (Times of San Diego). Responders located the missing person in the water at 7:13 p.m., began CPR and transported the person to Tri-City Medical Center, where the person was pronounced dead; the survivor was also taken for evaluation (Times of San Diego). Authorities were investigating the cause, so you should not read this report as establishing why the vessel capsized (Times of San Diego).
