Spotlighting Remote Camping and Hiking Destinations: The Maze District

by | Jul 13, 2025 | Hiking | 0 comments

If you hike one destination this year, make it the Canyonlands National Park’s Maze District.  Affectionately referred to as “The Maze”, this remote hiking site is adjacent to Utah’s Colorado and Green Rivers.

Whether your passion is peace and quite, ancient art or stunning canyons, you’ll find them at The Maze. This is hands-down one of America’s top hiking destinations.

Take on the Maze Challenge

A word to the wise: if you aren’t an experienced hiker, The Maze District will chew you up.  This Canyonlands National Park highlight isn’t for the weary or the weak.

As long as you are ready to put your body to the test, load up on the water (including some sports drinks with electrolytes) and take to the Maze District.

Tighten your wide-brimmed hat, hit the dry landscape and enjoy the visual feast.  Though the desert has the potential to be harsh on the body, this unique trail is perfect for backpackers.

Choose Your Own Hiking Adventure

Perhaps the best part about the Maze District is its openness.  This is your opportunity to freelance, hiking the canyons and trails you find most appealing.

If you have a full week away from work and other obligations, devote it to the Maze, knocking out 10 miles per day.

Savor the Sights

Wouldn’t it be nice to see 1,000-foot canyon escarpments?  Howe about the majestic Colorado River?

You can see both natural features and more in a single day at the Maze District.

Continue hiking through the District and you’ll find Cedar Mesa Sandstone, granaries, sandstone fins, postcard-worthy valleys and plenty more.

Snap some pictures, capture video and you’ll have images and footage with the potential to go viral.

The Fins are a Can’t-Miss Maze District Highlight

The Fins are massive sandstone formations that stand tall and narrow.  This is the perfect place to stop, catch your breath, enjoy a swig of water and snap some pictures.

Better yet, take shelter by the District’s famous Fins and enjoy a cool drunk with lunch.  Here, you’ll find shade and most importantly, some of the world’s most famous iconic natural features.

Time It Right

As long as you have sufficient water, you’ll find hiking this top draw is a blast, albeit between the months of September and May.  The Maze District is best hiked before June and after August.

When in doubt, hike the Maze District in the fall after the scorching hot summer months have come to a close.
