Spend some time wading into low-lying soggy ground and you’ll enjoy cover to nab rabbits.  Lay low or even surmount trees and you’ll have a better chance of discreetly pinpointing squirrel tails.

Find the Right Species

Quail, doves, woodcocks, grouse, rabbits or squirrels?  That is the question small game hunters must answer.

Chances are your local region has more than a couple of the animals listed above.  Select one or a couple abundant species and you’ll maximize the chances of a successful hunt.

If you aren’t sure which small game populations are most prevalent in your town, state or region, ask for help.  A quick phone call to your state game agency will inform you of local small game populations.

Start With an Easy Target

If you still aren’t sure as to which small game is best to hunt, take it easy.  The quickest and easiest small game animals are squirrels. 

You’ll find plenty of squirrels in forested spaces.  Moreover, the majority of states have lengthy squirrel seasons that typically run from fall through the end of winter.

Know Your Target

Above all, learn about the small game species you are targeting.  Spend at least 20 minutes reading about the habitat and habits of the animals you plan to hunt.

As an example, if you decide to hunt squirrels, be aware that they tend to feed around daybreak time.  Squirrels forage for seeds, nuts and berries. 

Center your focus on these hotspots and you’ll be that much more likely to enjoy your small game hunting experience.
