Did you know beavers have orange teeth? That’s because their chompers are packed with iron, making them super durable for nonstop gnawing. Beavers also build some of the biggest animal-made structures... one dam in Canada stretches over half a mile and can actually be spotted from space!
Even weirder: beavers have a secret set of lips behind their teeth, so they can munch sticks underwater without sucking in water. They’re underwater pros, holding their breath for up to 15 minutes and even sealing up their nostrils and ears.
These fuzzy engineers changed North America’s landscape way more than people realize. Before trapping nearly wiped them out, beavers shaped streams, built wetlands, and made homes for fish, birds, and frogs.
Today, you’ll find beavers all over the U.S., across Canada, Alaska, and even northern Mexico. If you’ve ever spotted a big, flat tail slapping the water, that’s your giveaway. They mostly hang out in ponds and streams, chomping on trees and aquatic plants.
