My boyfriend was a big tennis player through high school and college. We are always looking for fun, new ways to spend time outdoors together, and conveniently, there is a tennis court a few miles away from our house. At the end of last summer, he bought me a racket and rewrapped his old one so that we could start playing together. We didn't get too many days out there before winter set in, but admittedly, I was terrible. The learning curve was huge for me, and I didn't see that coming.

I've always been pretty athletic, but on the tennis court....I am a downright disaster. I would love some advice from the tennis players out there? Being taught a new skill from a significant other can be difficult, but he's the only person I've ever played with. What tips would you have for someone starting from zero?

Keep your feet moving until you plant them for a stroke.  Follow through the shot every single time.  Turn your wrist and arm over for top spin.

Anticipation is everything in tennis.  Start your swinging motion as the ball is about to bounce on your half of the court, recognizing it takes time to generate swinging momentum and force.  If you wait until after the ball has bounced, you'll rush through your windup.

@pjrnoa64 Omg I love this!! Thank you! These are all such great tips. I can't wait to give these a try. I think starting my swing that early will make a huge difference, and it wasn't even on my radar

Yes, you are welcome.  I had the advantage of taking indoor tennis lessons in my teenage years.  My parents were willing to pay for those lessons as they wanted me to be active during the winter months here in Buffalo, New York.  I worked throughout those years. so don't be too jealous.
