Summiting Mount Hood sounded like a dream—an alpine challenge, breathtaking views, and the ultimate reward of standing on top of Oregon’s highest peak. What I didn’t fully appreciate? Just how quickly conditions can change at high altitudes.

We started at 2 AM, headlamps flickering as we crunched our way up the icy slopes. The first few hours were smooth—steady climbing, a bright moon lighting the way, and the distant glow of Portland far below. But as we reached the Devil’s Kitchen area, the wind picked up fast. Suddenly, what had been a manageable climb turned into a battle against freezing gusts and swirling snow.

This is where mountaineering safety really kicks in. Our group stopped to reassess: Did we have the right gear? Was the weather getting too dangerous? Could we still safely descend if things worsened?

We checked our crampons, ice axes, and layers. Visibility was dropping, but we had GPS, extra food, and a solid plan. Pushing forward carefully, we reached the final stretch—the infamous Pearly Gates, where steep ice requires precise footwork. Step wrong here, and it’s a long way down.

By the time we reached the summit, the wind was howling, but the sunrise breaking over the mountains made every frozen step worth it. We snapped a few photos, took a deep breath (or tried to—thin air!), and started our descent before conditions worsened.

Key Safety Takeaways:

✔️ Always check the weather forecast. Conditions can change fast.

✔️ Carry the right gear. Crampons, ice axes, layers, and navigation tools are a must.

✔️ Know when to turn around. The mountain will always be there—your safety comes first.

✔️ Stay hydrated and fueled. High-altitude hiking drains your energy quickly.

We made it down safely, humbled by the mountain and grateful for preparation. Because in the end, the best summit is the one you live to tell stories about.
