I've played soccer my whole life. My dad raised me on the sport and coached many of my teams. As a family, we spent many weekends going to and from games for me and my sister. The most competitive time of my playing was during high school when I was on the HS team and playing on a club team. I didn't play competitively in college, but I played intramurals. I started refereeing soccer in college, too. Eventually, I started coaching club soccer and did that for many years.
Nowadays, I don't play much, but I watch the English premier league. I also enjoy watching other major tournaments. I still love the sport. Here's why:
- I love the improvisation that comes with soccer. Sure, there is a strategy and certain types of plays, but linking them together in a unique sequence on the fly is the essence of the sport.
- I love that you can play with anyone anywhere in the world and everyone on the pitch knows exactly what's going on. It's a language.
- I love how it's the sport requires a blend of physicality and finesse. Being able to feel like a ballerina and concert-goer in a mosh pit in a single game provides a holistic experience.
