I learned the hard way that nature doesn’t care about your plans.

A couple of years ago, I was hiking solo in the Rockies when a sudden snowstorm rolled in—way earlier than the forecast predicted. One minute, I was enjoying the crisp autumn air, and the next, visibility dropped to almost zero. My GPS was useless in the swirling whiteout, and the trail markers were buried under fresh snow.

Panic tried to creep in, but I took a deep breath and switched to survival mode. First, I needed shelter. I found a dense cluster of trees that offered some wind protection and used my emergency bivy sack (which I always carry) to create a makeshift sleeping area. Then, I gathered small dry branches under the trees and used my fire starter to get a small flame going—enough to keep me warm and visible.

I rationed my snacks and sipped water slowly, knowing dehydration was just as dangerous in the cold. As night fell, the silence was eerie, but I focused on staying calm. By morning, the storm had eased, and I carefully made my way back, using my compass to navigate toward a known landmark. When I finally reached the trailhead, I was exhausted but grateful.

Lesson learned? Always be prepared. Even on a “simple” day hike, I never hit the trail without:
✅ A reliable fire starter
✅ Emergency bivy or space blanket
✅ A backup compass and map
✅ Extra food and water
✅ Layers for sudden weather changes

Has anyone else had a survival moment on the trail? What’s your go-to emergency plan?
