This one might seem minor until you’re out in the woods and your headlamp dies—or your emergency radio, or your GPS. The type of batteries you pack really matters, especially in cold temps or long-term situations. This is one thing I learned in my very first Wilderness Survival class that I've never forgotten!
Lithium batteries are the go-to for survival gear. They’re lighter, last longer, and way more reliable in extreme temperatures than alkaline batteries. I’ve had alkalines completely drain overnight in freezing weather, while lithiums kept running like champs. They also have a longer shelf life—like 10 years or more—so they're ideal for emergency kits and bug-out bags.
Alkalines are cheaper and fine for everyday stuff around the house, but if you're depending on a piece of gear in a real backcountry or off-grid situation, go lithium every time. Worth every extra penny.
Curious what others are running in their kits—do you go all lithium or mix and match depending on the gear?
