Keep These Tips in Mind When Hiking in the Heat
Last Summer, I hiked The Wave. It was a dream hike, but it was in the middle of summer. Since we couldn't choose the reservation date, we had to go on the hike anyway. The mornings were fairly mild - in the high 60s. But, by midday, the temp climbed in the 90s. To make matters worse, the terrain is mostly either a sandy trail or bare rock. Things can get hot quickly.
I learned a lot that day about hiking in hot weather. I'm going to share some of my lessons and other tips with you so that you don't experience health issues, or worse, fatality, on a hot trail.

- Pack as little as possible. More weight requires more energy, which creates more heat. Discern what you need and what you don't.
- Start hydrating as early as 48 hours in advance. Don't wait until the day of to start hydrating. You can start drinking and other hydration liquids a plenty in as early as two days before the hot hike.
- Pack some electrolytes. Choose between liquids, tablets, or powders. Electrolytes can boost your body's energy and heat tolerance.
- Stay away from alcohol. Everybody knows to avoid alcohol on a hot trail. But I recommend abstinence for at least 48 hours. Don't get drunk the night before and expect to perform in the heat.
- Wear sun protection. I'm not a fan of sunscreen. I am a big fan of long sleeves and hats. Whatever you choose, protect yourself from the sun. I've seen people pack compact umbrellas or headbrellas.
- Don't push it. Two things are vital: your body's tolerance to heat and energy preservation. Both are crucial when you're hiking in hot weather. If you feel yourself getting winded, dizzy, or heavily fatigued, stop and rest. Don't take chances in the heat - it takes a huge toll on the body even after the hike.
- Dawn/dusk hiking. If possible, try to avoid the heat altogether by hiking early in the morning or just before sunset.
- Eat well, but don't stuff yourself. Food is energy. However, food can also wear your body down. Avoid foods that make your body tired while hiking. Eat a big meal the night before and a solid breakfast the day of. Snack throughout the hike if it's long.
