I grew up riding a fixed gear on the road in Los Angeles. Learning to ride the rode in that setting engrained a lot of aggressive and risky cycling behaviors in me. Nowadays, I am a born-again helmet-wearer and a much more reserved cyclist. Call it maturity. Here are my go-tos:
- helmet all the time
 - rear and front lights
 - reflective pant leg keeper thingy
 - defensive cycling tactics– if no bike lane or shoulder, I love taking the whole driving lane. And I always choose well-lit and quiet streets

What are your tactics for staying un-road killed while road cycling?
