It was supposed to be a simple paddle—just a few hours on the lake, gliding through calm waters under a cloudless sky. I had planned to stick to the main route, following the shoreline before looping back. But nature had other ideas.
Halfway through, I spotted a narrow waterway cutting through the reeds. It wasn’t on my map. A hidden cove, maybe? A shortcut? Curiosity got the better of me, and I turned my kayak into the passage.
The noise of the open water faded, replaced by the gentle rustling of reeds brushing my paddle. The channel twisted and narrowed, the water darkening under the canopy of overhanging trees. Then, suddenly—it opened up.
I found myself in a hidden lagoon, the water glassy and untouched. A great blue heron stood frozen on a fallen log, watching me as if deciding whether I was welcome. Turtles basked on the rocks, dragonflies hovered inches above the surface, and the world felt… still.
I sat there, floating, taking it all in. This wasn’t part of my planned route. It wasn’t marked on any map. But it was the highlight of my day—the kind of moment you don’t find unless you let the water lead the way.
