The winter is a perfect time to climb inside. Heck– any time of the year is good to climb inside. But climbing outside is out of the picture since it's cold, snowy, and a little miserable outside right now (at least where I live in NY).  So, if you want a fun indoor activity to try, like rock climbing, here are my recommendations.

  • Wear comfortable clothing. You don't need crazy performance outerwear. Just be comfy
  • Invite the whole family. Literally, everyone can climb, even Grandma
  • Choose a gym with auto belays– auto belays are machines that let you explore "roped" climbs without the need for a belay
  • Bring snacks and water. Rock climbing is a physical sport, so it's good to remain hydrated and well-fed
  • Give yourself 1-3 hours of climb time
  • HAVE FUN!

Two questions:

1. Do you need any special shoes for inside climbing? Even if they're not necessary, do you have any recommendations?

2. This is a weird question, but do I apply chalk on my hands when doing inside climbing?

Yes, you want to wear climbing shoes. Climbing gyms will have climbing shoes for rent. Or you can purchase a pair of your own.

It depends. Most climbers use chalk. Chalk is used to keep your skin dry because sweaty hands are slippery on the plastic indoor climbing holds. So if your hands are sweaty, using some chalk may be a good idea. But if your hands feel dry or not too sweaty, you don't technically need chalk.
