I recently moved back to the lakeside community I grew up in and am entranced by the frozen water I see out my window each day. The image of the ice fishing shanties peppering the lake is so quaint and I want to be involved! I have never been ice fishing in my life, but am so curious to learn more about it. Please send along any tips or tricks you have or guides for beginners! I love fishing the lake in the summer, and would love to be able to continue that into the winter!

Ooh yay, love this!!

I would say invest in good gear. All my winter gear was always for active use- snowshoeing, hiking, snowboarding, etc. So, I didn't really have the insulation level it takes to just sit still in the wind and cold. Investing in a good auger is helpful, too. Start with a hand auger and graduate to a power auger if you like it. Other than that, I would say start with a basic jig rod, and just try your hand at it! As for what you'll want to fish with, it depends so much on the lake, so either ask your local shop, or just wing it. See what works and what doesn't. It's really all trial and error, but it sure is a fun process! Have so much fun and good luck!
