Do you own or use a walking/hiking stick? I personally do not use one, but I've seen some really cool personalized ones while working as a ranger. I love seeing what people add to the handle of their sticks; things like special beads and feathers. I also love seeing the hiking medallions people have collected. If I used a hiking stick I think that would be a goal of mine- to collect as many medallions as I can. What would you include on a homemade walking stick?
I would want the wood to be special. Like from my favorite species of tree, if possible.
I think it would also be cool to have the handle meticulously carved to fit the ergonomic/anatomical characteristics of my dominant hand. But that would be tricky cuz maybe then it would only feel good in one hand.
I like the idea of having a leather or paracord loop attached at the top for hanging it. Maybe a short piece of climbing rope.
And my initials or special symbol wood-burned into the stick somewhere.
I wanted to share a little anecdote here.
I agree that walking sticks are more special. They're unique. They are a way to add a piece of gear to your kit that doesn't mean more plastic/synthetic materials.
My grandfather walked solo across the country when he was 90 years old. He wasn't backpacking. He wasn't wearing the finest selections of micro-wicking, packable, high-priced brands. He was wearing his old patch-covered jean jacket like always, and he was carrying his wooden walking stick. Not sure I know what it was made out of. I'm definitely sure he didn't.
When he passed, my mother had one specially made for each of his children. Really goes to show they can become more than just something to lean on out there. 😊
