When I first got into hiking, I carried way too much. Stuff people said I “had to have.” Truth is, half of it stayed in the pack and never got used. A few years and many blisters later, here’s the gear I actually bring — and what I’ve learned the hard way:
A pack that fits your back — not just one that’s trending
Trail runners > boots (unless you're going off-trail or snow)
A water filter that doesn’t make you rage-cry when it clogs
One good wool layer = gold
Trekking poles. Don’t wait until your knees beg for them.
I’m not saying my setup is perfect, but it works — and it’s light enough that I enjoy the hike, not just survive it.
