In the winter months, I hate being bundled up while hiking. A coat that's too big means I can't wear my backpack comfortably and then I also end up overheated. That's why I love having quality base layers. I can wear less but still stay super warm and comfortable. The past few years I've mostly been using cheap base layers I found at Costco, but they honestly get the job done. I did splurge on two pairs of REI brand that are especially comfy, but I haven't noticed much of a difference in effectiveness. What are your favorite brands? Do you think Smartwool is worth the price tag or is it just extra for fun designs? Weigh in!
@sarahruth333 I hope you get some replies. First, let me say that the cheap Costco base layers are just fine. I have some myself, and I have no complaints.
My problem is that I'm hot-natured. It can be 25 degrees outside, and I'll walk around in a short-sleeve shirt to keep from getting too hot and sweating. Once I sweat, I start getting chills. So I rarely wear a base layer unless I'm summiting, and only once I've surpassed 8,000 feet. In other words, it has to be really cold for me.
But it would be nice to get some suggestions.
I truly love good, quality gear....but I have to second @adventurejunkie
I have a variety of base layer brands. I've used Ibex, Smartwool, Kari Traa, Underarmour, and Hot Chillys.
I can honestly say that no matter the price tag, I don't notice a difference. For me, it's way more about the fabrics that feel best on my skin and the weight of the base layer. Spending more or less hasn't made a lick of difference!
