It started as a routine ride—50 miles through rolling hills, golden fields, and crisp morning air. I had mapped out the perfect route, a familiar road winding through the countryside. But sometimes, the best adventures come when you least expect them.

At mile 20, I spotted a side road I’d never noticed before—a narrow gravel path disappearing into the trees. “Should I take it?” I hesitated, then turned my handlebars and pedaled in.

The air changed immediately. The scent of pine filled my lungs, the road softened under my tires, and a gentle stream ran alongside the path. Birds fluttered overhead, and for a while, I felt like I had discovered a hidden world.

Then, the challenge came. The gravel turned rougher, the incline steeper. My legs burned, my tires skidded on loose rocks, and I questioned my decision. Was this a mistake, or was this exactly the kind of ride I was looking for?

After 15 grueling minutes, the climb ended abruptly. Before me stretched an open meadow with the most incredible view—a valley bathed in golden sunlight, a hawk soaring overhead. No cars, no noise, just me and the sound of the wind.

I sat on a fallen log, catching my breath. This unplanned detour turned out to be the best part of my ride. Sometimes, the best routes aren’t on the map.

I have a lot of fun designing planned routes. That being said, I also enjoy detours. Even silly little romps through puddles and mud.

One of my favorite things about cycling is exploring all the nooks and crannies that we take for granted in cars, like alleyways. I also love the shortcuts that cars cannot do. Like hopping curbs or riding pedestrian pathways.
