I finally took on one of the most legendary gravel rides in the U.S.—the Flint Hills of Kansas, home to the famous Unbound Gravel race. Let me tell you, riding on endless miles of chunky limestone and rolling hills is no joke, but it’s also some of the most rewarding riding I’ve ever done.
The first few miles felt smooth, but as soon as I hit the washboard sections and loose gravel, I realized this was a whole different beast compared to road cycling. Keeping momentum on steep climbs was tough, but finding that rhythm—where you just keep spinning and let the bike float over the rough terrain—felt amazing.
The real highlight? Bombing down a long descent, dust kicking up behind me, sun setting over the prairie, and nothing but open country ahead. That’s the kind of freedom only gravel biking can give you.
Who else is hooked on gravel riding? Any must-ride routes I should check out next?
Awesome story! I have very little background in the mountain biking world but still wanted to jump in and say thanks for sharing! The Flint Hills of Kansas are definitely a hidden gem. A lot of unexpected beauty smack dab in the middle of "fly-over"country!
