I have more than one if that's okay:
- Electrolyte tablets: Take the chewable tablets or the kind that dissolve in water.
- Buy sweat-resistant caps or hats: Otherwise, you'll ruin your favorite ballcap.
- Buy zip-off hiking pants: These are great for fall, winter, and spring hiking. If you get too hot, you can zip off the legs.
- Extra pair of socks: Wear thick, hike-ready socks. Don't buy cheap socks.
- Leave your keys behind: Never, ever, ever take your keys on the trail. Find somewhere either on your vehicle or in the surrounding terrain to hide them. Your keys are never secure on the trail.
- Use the Alltrails (or similar) App: Download the trail map in advance. Don't depend on your cell service.
- Don't make sandwiches: Basically, don't make or buy food that could potentially spoil or give off a strong scent. Make sure all food is in an air-tight and smell-tight container.
- Do not feed animals or leave scraps: This should go without saying, but you're hurting the animals and potentially hurting yourself.
- Hydrate the day before and the morning of: Don't wait until you're on the trail to hydrate. You need to start hydrating at least 24 hours in advance.
- Don't drink alcohol before a hot hike: If you're planning to hike in the heat, you need at least 48 hours between drinking alcohol and hitting the trail.
