Have you heard of the Manitou Incline in Colorado Springs??
It’s one of my favorite challenges. This old cable car track has been turned into one of the most intense hikes out there. Old rail road ties line this narrow passage 2000’ up the mountain. The crazy part? You’re gaining all of that elevation in under a mile. In other words, it’s a near-vertical ascent…and it is serious.
The first time I ever hiked it was absolutely brutal. I hadn’t lived in CO very long, and I was still acclimating to the elevation. I felt nauseous and completely exhausted. It wore me down more than any other athletic experience. Thankfully, I had a great partner that encouraged me without pushing, and I was able to finish and felt great by the end.
In time, the Incline became part of my normal workout routine. I started my days with it two or three times a week, and after the trail run back down the adjacent Barr Trail, I would leave feeling completely invigorated.
It’s no joke, but it’s an incredible workout and a fun accomplishment.
