Walking distance from my house is a nature preserve, Opacum Woods. It's about 270 acres with only 4 miles of trails. I love hiking there because it really does feel like I am surrounded by wilderness. The trailhead is at the end of a cul-de-sac and it's always very quiet in the neighborhood. To get there from where I live, I have to walk alongside a busy street so I love the transition from the commute there into the stillness of the forest and then back out again. I went on an edible plant walk there once and the guide pointed out the footprints of old settlements. It made me think about if any of those edible plants had maybe originated in a settler's garden and just kept growing there. Opacum is such a gem and I'm so lucky to have it close by!
