Just got back from the Mistico Hanging Bridges Trail in Costa Rica and WOW.
I seriously can’t stop thinking about this place. Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park near La Fortuna was easily one of the highlights of my whole trip. If you love hiking and you’re even slightly into jungle vibes, rainforest mist, and views that look like something out of a dream—you have to go.
The trail itself winds through the lush rainforest and takes you over six crazy-cool suspension bridges that sway gently (or not so gently) as you walk across them. Some are super high over the canopy. The tallest is almost 150 feet. There are regular bridges and paths too, so it’s not just a balance game the whole way, but wow, those hanging bridges are just so rad. With low clouds curling through the trees, the sounds of jungle creatures alive all around me, and the Arenal Volcano peeking through the clouds every once in a while- I was just utterly in awe.
I saw lots of toucans up close, heard howler monkeys, and was completely mesmerized by the vibrant plants and flowers everywhere. There were so many vipers and poison dart frogs along the way. I saw more vibrant species of birds than I ever could have anticipated. I just kept saying to myself, "This place is TEAMING with life." It’s about a 2-mile loop depending on how much exploring you do, and it’s super accessible—nothing too steep or strenuous. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Honestly, if I had more time during my travels, I would have gone twice in one week!
If you're in the area, don’t skip it. Mistico is a bucket list kind of hike that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the rainforest.
