Mass Audubon's Laughing Brook Wildlife Preserve is about 5 minutes down the road from my parents' house in Hampden, Massachusetts and it is an absolute hidden gem; the perfect peaceful outdoor escape. The preserve offers a beautiful mix of wooded trails, wetlands, and scenic views, making it ideal for a relaxing hike or birdwatching.
The trails are easy to moderate in difficulty, so it's a great spot for hikers of all levels. One of the highlights is the Laughing Brook, which runs through the property and quietly sings as you amble over the trails. There’s also a small observation deck where you can enjoy the surroundings and listen to the peaceful sounds of nature.
If you’re lucky, you might even spot some wildlife, as the preserve is home to various birds, deer, and other woodland creatures. It’s a perfect spot to slow down, disconnect, and enjoy the quiet beauty of nature. I feel so lucky to have grown up with such easy access to this spot. One of my favorite memories is hiking there with my father and hearing the loudest wild turkeys. I was really young so it scared me, but my dad helped me feel safe. At the end of that hike, a big rainstorm rolled through and my dad and I ran back to the car, laughing, and splashing in puddles.
