Dropping in to write another post about a favorite trail from my hometown Hampden, MA. This one is called "Goat Rock" after a historical story where one of William King's goats got stuck at the top of the rock and died. Sort of a morbid story... The rock itself is a highlight of the trail and is a great spot to rest or grab a snack. There are two different lookouts, both with beautiful views.
The hike is about 3.5 miles round-trip, with moderate difficulty, making it perfect for those looking for a challenge without being too overwhelming. Along the way, you'll pass through mixed hardwood forests, small streams, and some rocky sections that require careful footing. It's a great place for birdwatching, and the spring and fall seasons make it especially picturesque with colorful foliage or blooming wildflowers.
I hiked there once in high school and got completely lost, returning to the trial head way after dark. I was with three friends and we thought it was so funny how lost we'd gotten. When we returned to my car, the police were there and worried about us because the parking lot gates had been closed before dark. They were super nice to us, gave us water bottles, and sent us on our way. Such a funny memory considering how much I hike alone now, on much harder trails.
