In Bottrop, Germany, there is an old mine that's been converted to an outdoor recreation area. It's called Halde Haniel. There's a long, winding hiking trail that brings you to the top of a large hill. Up there is an art installation and you can see across the land to where the various mining buildings and structures stood. There are also mountain biking trails and from the top, you can see the bikers weaving all over like ants on a hill. I hiked here in the summer of 2022. It was incredibly hot and dry, but the breeze and views made it all worth it. I was there with my partner, visiting a business friend of his who had deep, intimate knowledge of the area. I was so happy he took us to this trail. Along the way I was able to capture really nice photos of the different flowers and plants growing alongside the trail, a beautiful juxtaposition with the barren mining land. It's been a year since my most recent international travel and I don't currently have anything lined up, but I'm itching to go see some nature outside America again. If you've traveled internationally and gotten up to something outdoorsy, what are your best recommendations?
