Montana holds how many hidden treasures. Sure, it is chockfull of untouched wilderness with wild long-distance trails running through it, but it's also incredible how many magical destinations exist right off the road. If you’ve ever driven Highway 2 near Libby, you’ve been right next to it—maybe even pulled over for a quick look—but this spot deserves more than a drive-by. The Kootenai River thunders over massive rock shelves, sending mist into the air and creating one of the most impressive waterfalls in the state.
The hike is short and easy, but the payoff is huge. First, you reach the falls—wide, powerful, and hypnotizing to watch—and then there’s the bridge. The Swinging Bridge hangs high above the river, shifting and bouncing under your feet just enough to keep things interesting. It’s sturdy, but it definitely makes you focus on every step. From the middle, you get an unreal view straight down into the canyon, the kind that reminds you why Montana is still untamed.
This is the kind of place where you can just sit and lose track of time—watching the water, feeling the ground rumble under you, and letting the wilderness sink in. Whether you’re just stopping through or making a day of it, Kootenai Falls is the perfect mix of adventure and easy beauty. I enjoyed hours of picnicking and exploring with a small group of friends there. I even took a plunge in the icy water - maybe not recommended for the faint of heart. The point remains, whether with a group of friends, solo, or on a family outing, this is a really beautiful place to spend the day!
Has anyone else out there visited this special spot??
