Some hikes push you physically, others test your mental strength—and then there’s Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, which does both! Last weekend, I set out before sunrise for what turned out to be one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes of my life.

The trail started off easy enough from Happy Isles, following the Mist Trail past the roaring Vernal and Nevada Falls. The morning mist kept me cool, but the elevation gain quickly reminded me that this was no casual stroll. By the time I reached Little Yosemite Valley, I knew the real challenge was yet to come.

Then came the cables. Standing at the base of the final ascent, staring up at the near-vertical rock face, my heart raced. Gripping those metal cables, pulling myself up, and feeling the sheer exposure was equal parts terrifying and exhilarating. Every step required focus, every pull demanded strength.

But reaching the top? Absolutely worth it. Sitting at 8,800 feet, overlooking Yosemite Valley, I felt a mix of exhaustion, triumph, and pure awe. The world stretched out in every direction, and for a few quiet moments, nothing else mattered.
