A few years back when I was living in Colorado, I was trying to plan what to do with my weekend. It was Friday morning, and I wanted to head out directly from work. I had thrown all my hiking gear and camping supplies in my car before clocking in for the day, but I still hadn't formulated a plan.
I spent the day poking around trail maps and doing some light research. I decided to head south to New Mexico as soon as I was off my shift. Bandelier National Monument was the plan. I mentioned that to a curious mind at a gas station on my drive there, and the chatty cashier behind the counter immediately informed me I absolutely must visit Tent Rocks, as well.
Bandeleir was truly incredible, and I fully recommend checking that out, too, but Tent Rocks was next level! If you're ever in the Santa Fe area looking for some great hiking, do not pass it up. I would have never heard of this extraordinary place at all if not for making small talk along the road. At the time, it was only a $5 entrance fee. I think they've bumped it up since the covid-era influx to public lands. It's still more than worth the price of admission for some time amidst the unique and otherworldly landscape! It feels and looks like a blend of the Badlands and Bryce Canyon...not to mention, it's completely empty, underrated, and magical in every way!
