About a year ago, I was traveling in Iceland with my oldest, best friend. We've known each other since we were 3 and this trip was full of silliness, adventure, and love. One of the stops we made was Thingvellir National Park. It was absolutely incredible to see a National Park in another country. We were able to walk between the tectonic plates, learn about the dark history of some of the park's frozen waters, and watch a breathtaking sunset paint the horizon gold. My biggest takeaway was how the conservation messages throughout the park weren't any different from home. All the same practices and ethos were there. Care for this land. There's a history here. This land is important for so many human, ecological, and spiritual reasons. The people there were the same mix of tourists and locals, holding reverence for the natural beauty around them. It really left me feeling like we are all connected and if there's anything that can make us realize that, it's nature and the quest of conservation. I really want to travel to more national parks in other countries. I've set my sights on Italy next because my family comes from Calabria, right outside of a national park. It also makes me think about how America was once known for the National Parks and our love of the land. Today it's much different.... What are your experiences with foreign national parks?
