Smokey Bear turned 80 years old last summer, and I was lucky enough to host a Smokey Bear Birthday Bash at my state park. I’ve always loved Smokey Bear, even before I was super outdoorsy. He’s always been cute and charming to me and when I became interested in hiking and conservation, I was even more enamored with Smokey. Some people find him to be controversial because he makes fire seem bad and scary, but I think his message is necessary. Not everyone can grasp the complexity and importance of controlled burns or necessary fire; and I think helping the public reduce their risk of starting wildfires is important. Smokey visited Quechee State Park alongside our local first responders. We had cake, burgers, and played music and games with our visitors. It was such a quaint evening and will always be one of my favorite state park memories. Have you ever met Smokey Bear?
