The first warm, rainy Spring evening is when salamanders and frogs wake up from their winter slumber, leave their cozy underground shelter behind, and head for their birthplace. They make way to vernal pools to begin singing, mating, and laying eggs! This is a big deal in Massachusetts and other places in the Northeast. It's referred to as "Big Night" up here. Many folks volunteer to direct traffic and help shepherd these slimy friends to safety. I haven't yet been able to be a Big Night volunteer, but I'm looking forward to next year when I have the opportunity. Would you stand out in the rain to help salamanders and frogs??
