In Vermont's Upper Valley, where I lived for the past three years, we often experienced heavy rainfall and damaging floods. In July of 2023, there was an especially devastating flood that ravaged most of the state. The state park I worked in took a massive hit and our trail was out of commission for months. Thankfully, the DOT and Forestry Dept were able to restore it, but the trail remains fragile and under threat of flooding again. What can we do to preserve these types of waterside trails that are in danger as climate change marches on? What are the best native plants to landscape with to keep the ground healthy and strong in the face of erosion? Do we just let nature take its course and find other places to recreate?
