Over the last few years I've gotten deeper and deeper into birdwatching and "birdlistening". As a musician, learning to recognize and attempting to replicate calls and songs has been so fascinating. The last couple of weeks I've had a little swarm of woodpeckers exploring some dead oaks on the perimeter of my property. I absolutely love woodpeckers and had no idea there were so many different kinds of them. We had a pair of downy woodpeckers and pileated ones (those guys are HUGE!) I could also hear two cardinals singing to each other across the lake I live on. One was in my yard and the other was all the way across the water, but their songs were clear as day and they were creating variations on each other. I find birdsong so haunting and ethereal, I'm overjoyed that it's Spring and the birds are returning. Do you have a favorite bird or birdsong? Any cool birding experiences?
