If you ever want to experience the "spiritual" side of Japan, throw in some seriously intense hikes, and possibly question your life choices, the Kumano Kodo is your ticket.

It all started as a “peaceful pilgrimage” to the sacred Kumano Shrines. What I didn’t expect was the endless stairs. And I mean endless. The first day, I was feeling pretty zen, soaking in the lush forests and quiet trails. By day two, I was staring at a never-ending set of stone steps, each one more treacherous than the last. I’m pretty sure a few of them had their own personal gravity fields—they just sucked the energy right out of me.

But it wasn’t all torture. There was something magical about walking through centuries-old forests, stumbling across hidden shrines, and being serenaded by the constant rustle of nature. Plus, the local food? Amazing. I’ll never forget the taste of fresh kumano beef—probably the best thing I’ve ever eaten while silently cursing a staircase.

The highlight? Reaching the Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine after what felt like a lifetime of climbing and descending. I was sweaty, sore, and oddly enlightened. And maybe a little surprised I hadn’t turned into a mountain goat at this point.

Would I do it again? Sure, but I’m bringing a mule to carry me next time.

Anyone else done the Kumano Kodo or another pilgrimage that kicked your b**t (in the best way)? Share your stories!
