So, I signed up for the Jeju Olle Trail thinking it would be a peaceful pilgrimage along the stunning coastline of South Korea’s Jeju Island. What I didn’t anticipate was how much “peace” would come with so. many. stairs. Seriously, I thought I’d be walking leisurely along beaches and through lush forests, but instead, I was climbing steep hills that seemed designed to turn my calves into iron.
The first day was great—beautiful ocean views, the scent of pine trees, and a gentle sea breeze. By day three, I was staring at a never-ending hill and wondering if I’d accidentally signed up for a mountain-climbing competition. But hey, every painful step came with a reward—more breathtaking views of the coastline and a surprising number of “hello”s from the friendly locals.
The real magic of the trail wasn’t the blisters (though there were plenty), it was the sense of connection. With each temple I passed and each small village I explored, I felt the island’s peaceful energy. That, and the local food. Seriously, if you’ve never had Jeju black pork, I highly recommend scheduling a pilgrimage just to taste it.
By the time I reached the end of the trail, I was a sweaty, exhausted mess—but I couldn’t help but feel spiritually refreshed. Would I do it again? Only if someone invents a "Jeju Olle Trail in a Day" shortcut.
Anyone else done a pilgrimage with unexpected challenges (and rewards)? Let’s swap stories!
When I set out to hike the Baekdu-daegan Trail, South Korea’s legendary mountain spine, I was prepared for stunning views and quiet spiritual moments. What I didn’t expect was how much “mountain” came with the trail. The Baekdu-daegan is no joke—think steep climbs, endless ascents, and an intimate relationship with your trekking poles.
Day one was smooth. By day two, I was already questioning my life choices as I faced a series of never-ending switchbacks. And that’s when I met the “mountain gods” of the Baekdu-daegan—sweat, fatigue, and a healthy dose of humility. The higher I climbed, the more I found myself trading "peaceful pilgrimage" thoughts for "Why did I think this was a good idea?"
But it wasn’t all suffering. The Baekdu-daegan is home to some of the most serene and beautiful landscapes I’ve ever encountered. Crisp mountain air, ancient forests, and glimpses of distant peaks kept me going. And then there were the temples—small, quiet, and perfect for reflection when I could manage to stop long enough to breathe.
After days of climbing, I finally reached a ridge where I could see the beauty of South Korea’s mountains stretching endlessly in every direction. The exhaustion melted away as I realized how far I had come—both physically and mentally.
Would I do it again? Maybe, but I’ll definitely bring a personal cheerleader to shout encouragement (and carry snacks).
