Just wrapped up a multi-day backcountry trek in Wyoming’s Absaroka Range, and it was one of the most rewarding trips I’ve done. We started at Brooks Lake Trailhead, pushing deep into some of the most remote wilderness I’ve ever experienced. No crowds, no cell service—just raw, untamed beauty.
The first night, we camped near a high-alpine meadow with grizzly tracks nearby—an intense but humbling reminder of where we were. The highlight was reaching a hidden glacial lake on day three, completely untouched, with towering cliffs and crystal-clear water. A perfect, icy swim after miles of hiking.
Navigation was tough, with faint trails and plenty of deadfall, but the sense of isolation made it worth it. There’s nothing like the deep silence of the backcountry, broken only by wind through the pines and the occasional elk bugle.
Who else loves exploring off the beaten path? What’s your most memorable backcountry experience?
This is such an inspiring story! I've still been a little skittish about backcountry camping, but this is motivating me!
I absolutely love the Beartooth-Absaroka Wilderness!! While living in Montana, I made it on quite a few hikes and did some car-camping there, but I never had the pleasure of spending some nights out in the backcountry.
I definitely had my uncomfortable grizzly situations in Montana, though, so I know that problem well!
I noticed you mentioned the lake on day 3- how many days/nights was your trip??
