Before you head out, review recent Yosemite and Outer Banks closure notices and check the agencies’ latest conditions for your destination. An October 18 report on a fatal Siletz Bay capsize also puts boating safety in focus.

Trail and Access Closures

  • Yosemite: October 17 Dome Fire closure notice: Yosemite’s October 17 notice closes the road segments, trail segments and areas marked on the Dome Fire Safety Closure 2026 version 9 map to all travel, with exceptions for administrative and firefighting activities (National Park Service). The order supersedes prior area closures and remains in place until rescinded; check the map before choosing your route rather than assuming an entire named road or trail has the same status (National Park Service). NPS lists falling limbs and trees, burning logs, hot ash and smoke-related hazards in the fire area (National Park Service).
  • Outer Banks: storm closure notice requires a pre-trip check: An October 17 NPS release announced closures by noon that day of Cape Hatteras National Seashore campgrounds, off-road vehicle ramps and visitor facilities, along with Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial (National Park Service). The release forecast wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph, high surf, overwash and coastal flooding, and reported Dare County’s mandatory evacuation of Hatteras Island visitors (National Park Service). The release says reopening depends on improved conditions and completed post-storm assessments; check the latest NPS and local travel notices before leaving, since this dated announcement does not establish each facility’s October 19 status (National Park Service).

Water Safety

  • Siletz Bay: capsize report confirms one death: An October 18 report says a boat capsized Friday at the mouth of Siletz Bay off Lincoln City, Oregon, putting six people in the water; all six reached shore, but one person was found dead on the beach (The Chronicle / The Oregonian). One person from the overturned boat was taken to a local hospital, and their condition was unknown in the report (The Chronicle / The Oregonian). Responders searched the bay until they established that everyone had reached land; the report does not identify the boaters or establish what caused the capsize (The Chronicle / The Oregonian).
