Check the latest Yosemite fire restrictions and Mount Rainier access changes before planning your next hike. If you fish recreationally for Atlantic bluefin tuna, NOAA has announced a quota transfer without changing the daily retention limits.

Wildfire and Fire Restrictions

  • Yosemite Dome Fire reaches 86% containment: The National Park Service’s October 13 morning release reports 86% containment, no perimeter change for several days and minimal fire activity, with command scheduled to return to Yosemite National Park on October 15 (National Park Service). Fire restrictions remain in effect below 8,000 feet; Buena Vista Trail and trails within the active fire footprint remain closed, including all south- and eastbound trails accessed from Glacier Point Road (NPS closure details). Alder Creek Trail is open north to Deer Camp Trailhead, and Chilnualna Falls Trail is open east from the trailhead to Chilnualna Fall and Crescent Lake (NPS access update).

Trail and Access Closures

  • Mount Rainier reopens White River and selected Sunrise access: In its update dated October 13, Mount Rainier National Park lists White River Road and trails along it as reopened until the normal winter season closure, while White River Campground is closed for winter (National Park Service). Sunrise Road remains closed to public vehicles from the White River Road junction, but you may walk or bicycle on it; reopened Sunrise-area trails include Burroughs Mountain, Sourdough Ridge and Palisades Lakes, with Sunrise Camp, Upper Palisades and Dick’s Lake camps open (NPS access update). Do not treat these reopenings as park-wide access: trails north of Sourdough Ridge, including Mount Fremont Trail, remain closed, as do the Grand Park area, the specified Northern Loop segment and Wonderland Trail between Carbon River Suspension Bridge and Frozen Lake (NPS closure details).

After confirming your entire route is open, review your essentials in our Hiking collection.

Fishing and Regulations

  • NOAA adds quota for recreational Atlantic bluefin tuna: NOAA’s action issued October 13 transfers 15 metric tons from the Reserve category to the Angling category’s large school/small medium bluefin subquota, bringing that subquota to 188.4 metric tons and leaving 27 metric tons in Reserve (NOAA Fisheries). The action applies to HMS Angling and HMS Charter/Headboat permitted vessels fishing recreationally; existing daily retention limits remain in force, and targeted bluefin fishing remains prohibited in the Gulf of America (NOAA action details).
