Hunting and Seasons

• Minnesota’s regular waterfowl season opens 30 minutes before sunrise on Saturday, September 26. The Minnesota DNR also highlights license and electronic licensing changes for 2026. Read the Minnesota DNR update before you head out.

Fishing and Regulations

• NOAA says the 2026 South Atlantic federal recreational red snapper season will run October 9 through October 11, with eligible state permit projects extending through October 22. Check the NOAA Fisheries announcement for season and permit details.
• NOAA closed the 2026 Area 2A non-Tribal directed commercial Pacific halibut fishery after the fleet reached an estimated 96% of its 261,211-pound allocation. Read the Pacific halibut closure notice before planning a commercial trip.

Wildfire and Fire Restrictions

• The BLM Lakeview District announced that public-use fire restrictions will be rescinded effective September 22. Before you light a fire, check the BLM fire prevention order and follow local rules. Always fully extinguish your campfire until it is cold to the touch.

Trail and Access Closures

• Yosemite National Park remains open, but the Chilnualna Falls Trail, trails toward Buena Vista and Crescent Lakes, and the Ostrander Lake Trail with areas south of it remain closed because of the Dome Fire. Check the National Park Service update before your hike.

Water Safety

• A 21-year-old man drowned in Lake Norman while trying to help his sister after her kayak capsized. Officials said his sister was wearing a life jacket, but he was not. Read the FOX Carolina report, and make sure you and every member of your group wear a properly fitted personal flotation device.
