Boating is likely the most dangerous thing you do next to driving your car.  It’s easy to forget about the threats that lurk below when you are basking in the sun on your boat.

Take the proper precautions and you’ll remain safe and secure on the water.  Here’s how to do it.

1. Check the Hull

Boat hulls are often overlooked as what is out of sight tends to be out of mind.  The hull should be washed after expeditions to eliminate grime, debris and salt.

Take a close look at the hull for cracks while on land so you don’t end up with a leak the next time you hit the water.

2. Check the Owner’s Manual

If your boat owner’s manual is collecting dust, you are not alone in your crowd.  Take a close look at the manual for guidance regarding service.

Stick to the recommended intervals for service and you’ll take to the water with confidence.

3. Mind the Trailer

In the context of safety, the trailer is just as important as the boat itself.  Maintain and service the trailer and you’ll transport your boat without worry.

The alternative is to let the wheels, bearings, tires, brakes and signals deteriorate to the point that boat transportation becomes riskier than choppy waters.

4. Engine Maintenance

Boat engines are not the same as car engines.  The average boat engine requires frequent attention.

Ideally, the engine will be flushed after each ride.  The flush should occur with fresh water to eliminate dirt and salt.  This component of boat maintenance prevents potential engine-ruining corrosion.

5. Pay Attention to the Fuel System

The fuel and stabilizer used in your boat are its lifeblood.  Opt for high-quality fresh fuel along with stabilizer and you’ll increase your boat’s longevity.  These additions are particularly important when storing the boat for a lengthy period of time.

Be sure to check the fuel lines for leaks and cracks at least once each boating season.

6. Perform a Battery Inspection

Boat batteries are commonly overlooked as they aren’t easily visible.  Take a look at the boat battery, ensuring the terminals are clean and free of corrosion.

Be sure to charge the battery after the off-season for on-water safety.

7. Oil Changes

Your boat’s engine requires oil for proper functionality.  Change the oil with regularity and you’ll extend your boat engine’s useful life.

Any oil will not suffice.  Choose oil recommended by the manufacturer and change it in accordance with the service manual instructions and guidelines.

8. The Cooling System Matters

A seemingly minor blockage in the cooling system can cause dangerous overheating.  Excessive heat has the potential to ruin your prized boat.

Check the vessel’s water intake grates, ensuring they are free of all debris for a properly functional cooling system.

9. Inspect the Jet Pump

The jet pump, also known as the jet drive, has the potential to collect random debris ranging from pieces of plastic to seaweed and beyond.  Remove those items from the jet pump and you’ll heighten its efficiency and thrust.

The jet pump inspection is also the perfect time to check the impeller for damage that might hinder performance.
